The mounting height and the length of a towel bar are the two most important measurements to take. The standard mounting height of a towel bar will be 48” from the floor. This mounting height is the most versatile, accommodating the average person comfortably. In addition, this mounting height is perfect for holding a bath towel without having it touch the floor. This will be the case for both standard and oversized bath towels. The length of a towel bar can be anywhere above 12”, so an appropriate mounting location is key. The wall opposite of your bathroom vanity is a good location, as long as a standard mounting height is achievable. The length of the towel bar should fit comfortably in the desired location, with at least 6” of space on either end of the towel bar.
To accurately measure your bathroom for a towel bar, we suggest you follow these 5 easy steps:
- Measure all of the walls of your bathroom to get an idea of the overall size of the bathroom
- Decide on which wall(s) will accommodate your towel bar(s).
- Measure the empty space available on each of those walls. You should measure the distance between walls or between any fixtures that may be in the space. This will give you the maximum length that you could theoretically have for the towel bar.
- Once you have the total distance, you should subtract 6” from that length that will give you the maximum towel bar size that you should have. Subtracting 6” will ensure you have at least 3” of space on either side of the towel bar which would increase the comfort of the bathroom.
- Hold a tape measure up against the wall and visualize the towel bar size in step 4. If this size seems too big, reduce the length to find the perfect size. You can also consider using two towel bars if your bathroom is on the bigger side.
