What is Considered a Standard Towel Bar Size?

A towel bar will generally come in three standard sizes. However, they are not limited to these sizes. 18”, 24” and 30” are the most common towel bar sizes. Each towel bar can be placed and used effectively in different situations. For smaller bathroom and powder rooms, 18” towel bars will be sufficient for both hand towels and folded bath towels. 24” towel bars are great for both small and large bathroom spaces. These serve as somewhat of an average, or middle ground in terms of typical towel bar sizes. Towel bars that measure 30” or longer should only be used in large bathrooms with an ample amount of space. This is for reasons of both accessibility and design. Towel bars should follow a series of qualifications.

Towel Bar Dimensions

When looking for a towel bar, it is also very important to consider the following dimensions:

  • Depth of the towel bar - The standard depth of a towel bar will generally fall between 2” and 3” for most towel bars. The depth of a towel bar is determined by measuring how much space is between the wall and the bar on which a towel is held. Depending on the style of towel bar, this measurement can vary.
  • Thickness or diameter of the towel bar - Typically most towel bars will have a diameter or thickness of about ½” to 1”, with ¾” being the most common. This will be the case for most round towel bars. Rectangular towel bars will vary in how they are made, with some being much thinner, and others being more similar to round towel bar thickness.
  • Typical size of the backplates or Escutcheon plate dimensions - If a towel bar has any escutcheon plates or backplates, they will typically fall within the range of 3” x 3” or below. The length and width of the backplates will vary depending on the style of the towel bar.
