ADA compliant grab bars are bathroom safety grab bars that are compliant with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). For a grab bar to be ADA compliant, it must meet specific measurements and be installed in specific locations in a bathroom. This requirements ensure that anyone with a disability will be able to safely and comfortably use the restroom and any applicable fixtures such as a toilet or shower.

Mounting an ADA Compliant Grab Bar

ADA compliant grab bars are not only useful in terms of comfort and accessibility, but often necessary in many situations. Due to ADA requirements, they must meet specific measurements in terms of mounting location. The height of an ADA compliant grab bar should be between 33" and 36" above the floor. Depending on where the grab bar is going to be mounted, other specifications must be met as well.

ADA Compliant Grab Bars for a Toilet

A rear grab bar (behind the toilet) must be at least 36" long, with the end of the grab bar that is closest to the wall 12” from the centerline of the toilet. It must extend at least 24” from the opposite side. A side grab bar must be at least 42” and mounted no longer than 12” from the back wall. The end of the ADA compliant grab bar must be 54" from the opposite side wall.

ADA Compliant Grab Bars for a Shower

An ADA compliant grab bar in a shower will vary depending on whether or not the shower is transfer stall or a roll-in stall. Transfer showers are used for individuals who are able to stand in the shower and walk in and out of the shower on their own. A roll-in shower is for those who use a wheelchair, allowing them to freely move in and out of the shower while still in the wheelchair.

Transfer Showers

The inclusion of an ADA compliant grab bar in a transfer shower can be done multiple ways. The shape of a grab bar will generally be an L shape or a straight bar. The grab bar should cover the entire depth of the control wall and halfway along the back wall, at 18” away from the control wall. There should be at least 1-1/2" - 2" between the wall and the ADA compliant grab bar. Each ADA compliant grab bar should be installed to be able to support 250 pounds of weight.

Roll-In Showers

There needs to be at least two ADA compliant grab bars in a roll-in shower, one on the back wall and one opposite the shower seat. If there is no seat, a U-shaped grab bar must be implemented in order to cover three walls of the shower. The same mounting measurements and specifications as a transfer shower must be met.

ADA Compliant Grab Bars for Bathtubs

Permanent Bath Seat

ADA compliance regulations require three ADA compliant grab bars to be installed. There should be two grab bars on the back wall of the bathtub, parallel to each other. Another grab bar should be installed on the front end of the bathtub. Each bar should be mounted no more than 15” from the head end of the wall and 12” from the foot end of the wall. The first grab bars should be installed 8” - 10” from the rim of the bathtub. The grab bar parallel to the first one should be mounted 33" - 36" from the floor.

No Permanent Bath Seat

If there is no permanent bath seat, 4 grab bars will be required. All of the same measurements and placements are required, with the addition of an additional grab bar on the back wall. This ADA compliant grab bar should be at least 24" long. The head-end grab bar should be at least 12".
