Towel Bars Buying Guide

Towel Bar Installation Types: Drill vs Self-Adhesive

One of the newer trends with bathroom accessories is the development of highly reliable adhesive that can be used to install towel bars. The leader in the development of adhesive for bathroom accessories has been 3M; 3M has developed strips that can be attach to the backplates of many styles of towel bars and has been tested to be essentially as reliable as mounting a towel bar with screws. The benefits of a self-adhesive towel bar is that it can be installed with relative ease while giving you the ability to avoid drilling into the wall or your tile; this can be especially beneficial if you have expensive or decorative tiles. Accordingly, a self-adhesive towel bar will give you more flexibility with changing your design over time; since your wall or tile will not be drilled into, the adhesive bar can simply be removed and replaced with any other towel bar that will fit the space without have to consider prior holes that were drilled. Overall, this makes self-adhesive towel bars a very compelling and interesting option for any bathroom.

In the meantime, standard drill-in towel bars still remain the most popular option. Drill-in towel bars are the more sensible choice for commercial bathrooms since their installation is essentially permanent and they would be much more difficult to remove from the wall than an adhesive towel bar. For long-term solutions that do not require or desire flexibility with their bathroom accessories, drill-in towel bars should be the preferred choice. Furthermore, most of the towel bars offered in the market are drill-in towel bars, which gives you a broader selection for choosing a towel bar

Towel Bar Features to Consider

Towel bars are relatively simple and standard items. Of course, it may be very important for your bathroom design to choose a designer or decorative towel bar but further to that there might be several other features to consider.

  • Double towel bars - If you anticipate that a single towel rail might not be sufficient, you can consider a double towel bar which would allow you to hang multiple towels. Double towel bars can be either completely horizontal or have the bars on different levels which can be very beneficial for holding a large towel along with multiple hand towels.
  • Towel Bars with Compatible Accessories - towel bars can be designed to accommodate bathroom complements such as toothbrush holders, soap dispensers and soap dishes. These complements are designed to be seamlessly integrated with the towel bar providing additional utility and space saving benefits for a bathroom. The Gerla towel bars by WS Bath Collections are a perfect example of these types of towel bars.
  • Choosing a Towel Bar Finish and Design

A general rule for designing a bathroom is that you should designing around your bathroom sink or vanity. Start with choosing a bathroom vanity (or sink), then choose a matching faucet and your plumbing accessories such as your trap and drain. From there, we recommend that you match your towel bar and the rest of your bathroom accessories with the bathroom faucet and the plumbing fittings. For instance, if your bathroom faucet is in polished chrome, chose a polished chrome towel bar; if you have a modern bathroom, you should use a sleek or a modern towel bar. The most towel bar finishes are currently chrome towel bars, matte black towel bars, and rose gold towel bars.
