Designer Bathroom Sinks

The traditional designer bathroom sink is typically a round or oval bowl shape. This design still works for most bathrooms and still amongst the most common designs. However, round vessel bathroom sinks have also evolved in design by incorporating new materials such as hand-cut crystal, colored ceramics, unique stones, and designer patterns to create the modern vessel bathroom sinks that are available today. Although there are still many designer round or oval countertop sinks, the trendier option is becoming rectangular vessel bathroom sinks.

Rectangular designer bathroom sinks are typically available in much larger sizes than a round bathroom sink. Similarly, bathroom sink designers are able to incorporate the latest material and finish technology, however, with more of the sink body to work with, designers are able to stretch their imagination to create masterpieces. Some of the design features that rectangular vessel bathroom sinks include are ramped sink designs, hidden overflows, deck-space built into the sink, and many other small aesthetics that can help transform the design of your bathroom. When incorporated well into the design, high-end bathroom sinks can redefine the bathroom and become the centerpiece of the room.

Most of the vessel bathroom sinks available today are made of ceramic, although stone and glass vessel bathroom sinks remain common. It is common for vessel bathroom sinks to be used in pairs such as in a master bathroom, commercial bathroom, or any other bathroom that is commonly used simultaneously by two or more people. For that reason, the most common size for vessel bathroom sink is typically between 15” to 25”. The smaller sizes will help you maximize your counter space and make the bathroom more comfortable. Large vessel bathroom sinks are however trending and it is becoming increasingly routine for designers to incorporate trough vessel bathroom sinks (larger bathroom sinks that accommodate two faucets) in their bathroom designs.

How to Install a Vessel Bathroom Sink

Vessel bathroom sinks are the simplest type of bathroom sink to install. Despite the unique and extravagant designs that some of these sinks have, essentially a vessel bathroom sink is a bowl. The most important part of installing a vessel bathroom sink is accurately measuring your bathroom vanity or countertop to determine the size of the sink(s) that you need and the locations of the bathroom sink, bathroom faucet and any other accessories or fixtures that you need to incorporate. For any vessel installation, we recommend having a minimum of 4” of space on all sides surrounding the bathroom sink, however, in a small bathroom, you may not have that luxury. If you are using a deck mounted faucet, it is recommended that the faucet is installed between 2” to 4” behind the sink. Most bathroom faucet spouts are angled. Accordingly, faucet spout should reach approximately one third into the bathroom sink, which due to the angle, would allow the water to flow roughly around the middle of the basin. The same rules apply for a wall mounted bathroom faucet.

Once the measurements are finalized, you are ready for the installation. Most bathroom vanities or countertops that are meant to accommodate a vessel sink have pre-drilled holes for the vessel sink. If your counter does not have pre-drilled holes then you will likely need a professional to drill the counter. The location of hole will be the location of the center of the sink. When placing the vessel sink on top of the counter, it is optional that you silicone caulk to seal the sink to the countertop for additional security, but for many projects that may not be necessary.

Once the sink is positioned and secured in place, it is time to install your fixtures (drain, trap and faucet). With the vessel sink secured in place, place the top part of the drain through the drain hole and secure the drain tightly from underneath the sink. Next, install the p-trap into the wall and secure the p-trap to the drain tightly. Most p-traps will include a rubber seal to help secure the connection. Finally the sink part of the installation is complete and you can move forward with installing the bathroom faucet.
